July inspired us to adopt our second Greyhound Max.
She let us know, that she would like to live with one of her own kind and we really thought long and hard before deciding that perhaps, July may indeed have a very valid point. There are so many older greyhounds in need of a home and I regularly started to check out the oldies website on: Oldies Club
Early September 2005, Max was adopted. July went to meet him, they seemed to like each other and I brought him home on a sunny Thursday afternoon.
His teeth were very bad and his breath smelled horrible but that was soon put to right by giving his a raw diet and keeping away from the dried commercial foods.

Goodbye to Max
On Tuesday May 23rd, we had a quiet evening, watching some TV, when I felt that Max was just not well. His breathing was laboured and I really knew that something was possibly seriously wrong.
My son Marc encouraged me to call the emergency vet and they suggested that I bring Max into the veterinary hospital. It was Mr. Clark on duty and although he never treated Max, we had established a positive relationship. Although initially he didn't find anything specific, he trusted my judgement and continued with his examination.
He became worried when he couldn't hear the heartbeat as clearly on the left as on the right side. A scan was made and it showed a build up of fluids in the chest cavity.
Mr. Clark feared the worse, a tumour or a part collapsed lung which had twisted, but to be quite honest, I didn't quite understand this.
Poor Max was quite distressed by that time and we needed to take some serious decisions as to help him to Cross the Rainbow Bridge. He really didn't want many months of difficult and intrusive procedures, without any guarantees.
It was decided to take Max home and let him have a restful night, then return the next morning to see Mr. Clark.
Max crossed the Rainbow Bridge today Wednesday May 24th, at 09.30 am.

The whole house is just so quite without Max and he wasn't the one who makes the noise! Bo has taken it hard, July misses him and Shadow is unsure and clingy.
Max has enriched our lives so much. He was a real gentleman. When he came I was a little worried about Shadow's reaction but I needn't worry. Max made sure that he showed respect to Shadow, which reassured him. He also made it clear that he wasn't a walkover either and Shadow respected that too. Max never, ever put a foot wrong. He adapted himself very well to family life, although he certainly found it a little weird in the beginning. He so enjoyed running free in the woods. He wouldn't have won any obedience prizes but came back when it mattered and he enjoyed having the same walk in the woods, it seemed to reassure him.
Max was a little aloof in the first few months with us but soon he grew to trust me and it was a beautiful gift to have him put his head against me. It has given him the knowledge that he was understood and that his needs and wishes would be met to the best of our ability. I feel that this was very much a new experience for Max.
Early morning, the hounds would gang together and give free for all concerts!!! Good thing that I don't have close neighbours!
And they sang in tune too!
A few months ago, Max discovered "tea". Sweet, milky and lukewarm tea! Apparently, when racing, he was given some sort of sweet drink to build him up before a race. I just don't know if tea reminded him of that time but he sure loved it and never missed an opportunity to make us aware of this.
Hopefully Max has enjoyed his very short time with us and we wish him well, surrounded by all he loves and enjoys. This wise gentleman dog, will be so much missed by us all.
Goodbye Beautiful Max, Rest in Peace.
