Maia
After many years of waiting for the pitter patter of Danefeet, Maia came to us in Spring of 1977 and was my first ever Great Dane. From day one, she showed herself to be full of character and would grow up to become a real Lady. She thoroughly enjoyed human company and never failed to do her party tricks whenever visitors appeared. She had an unique way of showing her disapproval by sitting in the middle of the living room and turning her back to us. One of Maia's greatest joys in life, was catching golfballs in mid-air and as the local woods are next to a golfcourse...we became quite unpopular with the Golfers. She never quite understood why she could not join the Golfers and catch their balls for them. ___________________ The story which could best illustrate Maia's character is the following: One day when shopping, I included a packet of ham for my housebound neighbour, amongst my list of daily needs but when I arrived home, no ham could be found. I really thought that I had bought it, so after apologizing to my neighbour, for my forgetfulness, I promised to buy it for her the next day. Next day, exactly the same thing happened. By then of course, I knew perfectly well that I had bought the ham and put it safely into my shopping bag. Perhaps it had fallen out of the bag so I returned to the car and checked it thoroughly. Carefully packed away under the seat, I found two empty ham wrappers... Whilst I was busy with other things, Maia must have very carefully taken the ham out of my shopping bag, without disturbing any other shopping, obviously eaten the ham and put the empty wrappers back under the car seat! Rona joined us in Summer 1978 Sadly Maia never survived an operation for bloat in the Summer of 1983.
